Keeping Chilean Copper at Number One
The world's largest copper producer cuts design time with AVEVA NET
Codelco is Chile's largest company and the world's largest copper producer. It is also the first company in the Chilean mining industry to integrate and systematise 3D technologies and Information Management software across multiple design platforms at the plant design stage of project execution. Such a forward-thinking approach is vital, as falling copper output threatens Chile's global market share. Using modern technologies to streamline business processes is seen as a key to defending Chile's established position as the world's leading copper exporter.
Chile has been producing copper for 200 years and has been the world's biggest producer since the 1990s. Not surprisingly, however, the output from many of its mines is now falling. Developing new deposits is a high-risk strategy that can take decades to achieve economic returns, so the emphasis is on extending the working lives of existing mines, and increasing their operating efficiency.
But this requires significant investment. Codelco has estimated that between 2014 and 2023 it will need to invest USD 12,086 million in revamps, mainly in Chuquicamata and El Teniente, USD 9,622 million in expansion projects such as Andina and Salvador, and USD 6,429 million in greenfields. To make the most of these investments, Codelco aimed to streamline engineering processes to reduce overruns.
